Joining a Zoom meeting takes seconds and does not require an account. You can join by clicking a link, entering a Meeting ID + passcode, or from your browser without installing anything. This guide covers all three methods on laptop and mobile, plus how to fix common camera/mic problems. National IT Service is an authorised Zoom partner in India — for teams that host meetings, we supply paid Zoom licenses with GST invoice.
Step 1 — Join by clicking the link (easiest): Tap the Zoom link someone shared on WhatsApp, email, or calendar. It looks like zoom.us/j/1234567890. Your device opens the Zoom app (or asks to open it); if you don't have the app, choose "Join from browser". You're in.
If nothing happens, copy the link into Chrome and press enter
On mobile, install the Zoom app first for a smoother join
Step 2 — Join by Meeting ID and passcode: Open the Zoom app, click "Join", and type the 10-11 digit Meeting ID. Enter your display name, then the passcode when prompted. This is useful when you only have the ID (e.g. read out in class or printed on an invite).
The Meeting ID and passcode are both in the invitation text
Enter your real name so the host recognises and admits you
Step 3 — Allow camera and microphone: When your device asks, tap "Allow" for camera and microphone. Choose "Join with Video" (or without) and "Join with Computer Audio" / "Call using Internet Audio". Test that others can hear you.
If your mic doesn't work, check Zoom has permission in your device Settings
Use headphones to avoid echo
Step 4 — Wait to be admitted: If the host enabled a Waiting Room, you'll see "Please wait, the host will let you in soon." Stay on the screen — the host admits you manually. Once in, mute yourself until it's your turn to speak.
Join 2-3 minutes early so you're admitted before it starts
Your name shown to the host is whatever you typed — make it recognisable
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a Zoom account to join a meeting?
No. Joining a meeting is free and requires no account — just the link or the Meeting ID + passcode. You only need an account to host meetings. However, some hosts set "Only authenticated users can join", which asks you to sign in with a free account.
Can I join a Zoom meeting without downloading the app?
Yes. On the join page, click "Join from your browser" — it works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari with no install. The app is more reliable and unlocks features like virtual backgrounds, so it's recommended for regular use.
How do I join a Zoom meeting on my phone?
Install "Zoom Workplace" from the Play Store or App Store, then tap the meeting link or open the app and tap "Join" to enter the Meeting ID. Allow camera and mic access when asked.
Why can't I hear or be heard in the Zoom meeting?
Usually a permissions issue. Check Zoom has microphone access in your device Settings, tap "Join with Computer Audio", and make sure you're not muted (unmute in the bottom-left). If others echo, use headphones.
